Hi, I'm Audrey Smith, the driving force behind English on the Run.
In 2018, I embarked on this journey with a clear vision: to revolutionize language learning through flexible and innovative approaches.
My inspiration come from my own personal experiences – I grew up in Australia but as an adult I moved to Italy, and now Palma, Spain. I know the challenges of overcoming language barriers firsthand. Navigating a foreign culture, I've felt the familiar pang of nervousness about speaking another language.
It's this empathy that guides my commitment to guide you towards unlocking your true potential in English.

So, let's take a sip of my coffee... [ahhh] I love taking my time with my morning brew. No rushing. Just enjoying the moment.
But... did you notice what I just did? I didn't chug it down like a machine. I paused.
And that is exactly what we need to talk about today.
Many mature English learners tell me: "Audrey, when I travel, I feel like a boring version of myself. My mind goes blank, I panic, and I just smile, nod, and say 'Yes, yes, good.' I feel like a child."
You have checked off so many big boxes in life—career, family—but this one bucket list dream of speaking fluent English feels unachieved.
You think the problem is that your English is too slow. Traditional school teachers told you that fluency means fast.
But that is a giant lie.
Interesting, mature adults don’t talk like speedboats. They take their time. They use The CEO Pause.
Today, we are putting a cushion under your brain. Here are 4 simple tools to buy you thinking space so you can speak with your real personality abroad.

Imagine you are at a lovely dinner while traveling. Someone asks you a deep question: "What is the most beautiful place in your country?" If you rush, you will panic and say, "Uh, Madrid is nice." Boring! You are way more interesting than that.
How to fix it: Look them in the eye, smile, and say:
"That’s a good question..." or "That’s a really good point."
You look incredibly polite, warm, and worldly. But honestly? You just bought three seconds for your brain to find the right words to describe that beautiful beach or mountain town. No hurry.
You are telling a wonderful travel story, but halfway through, you get completely lost in a complicated grammar structure. You are stuck. You want to disappear.
How to fix it: Don't panic and stop talking. Just stop, smile, and use your delete button:
"You know what... let me say that another way."
It is incredibly natural. It tells the listener, "I care about this connection, so I’m going to simplify it for us." It clears the air, drops the heavy grammar, and keeps the conversation alive.
You have a beautiful, deep feeling in your soul—maybe how you felt watching a sunrise in Asia—but your English vocabulary feels too simple. You feel frustrated because you don't know the "perfect" words.
How to fix it: Stop searching the dictionary in your head. Say this:
"What I’m trying to say is..."
This phrase is like an arrow. It tells the listener, "Forget any mistakes I just made. Look right here, because this next sentence is what I really feel." It forces them to connect with your emotion, not your grammar.
Fulfilling your bucket list dream isn't about being a perfect textbook. It's about having the tools to be yourself.
Next time you are traveling and meet someone new, don't rush. Take a slow pause and enjoy the connection.
If you want to hear exactly how these smart pauses sound in a real conversation, listen to The Bangkok Experiment story series.
Our character, Marc, uses these exact expressions to slow down, make friends, and share stories in Thailand.

Anyway... I should get back to my coffee before it gets cold!
